Making The Engineering Career Connection Program 2005 Program Report

Program Purpose
The purpose of the program is to encourage academically able, upper-level public school, parochial school and home school educational programs students in the Baltimore Metropolitan regional to enroll in college engineering programs and pursue careers in the various engineering disciplines, and consider the greater Baltimore area as a location to begin employment and/or continuing education.

Program Focus
The program focused on upper-level public school, parochial school and home school students. Baltimore regional local public school systems, the Archdiocese of Baltimore Schools, and home school groups who participated in the Maryland Engineering Challenge program, are invited to no nominate students for participation in the program. Students selected for the program completed an application documenting high school academic performance, financial need, desire to participate in the program, and other standard selection criteria utilized by JHU/WSE to identify scholarship worthy students.

The Program
The Making The Engineering Career Connections Program consists of two components

Summer enrollment in the Johns Hopkins University, Whiting School of Engineering "What is Engineering" college freshmen introductory course. This is the same introductory course that WSE undergraduates register for in their first semester. Program students that complete this course would receive three undergraduate level credits and an official JHU transcript. The summer course for 2005 was scheduled: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 7, 2005 to August 7, 2005, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, JHU School of Engineering.

Students must commit to work with the MD Engineering Challenges Program next year. This portion of the program is designed to encourage students to practice the engineering skills and knowledge developed in the course as mentors to others that are just exploring engineering through these design challenges.

The "What is Engineering" course was developed by Professor Michael Karweit, faculty member who is the instructor during the regular academic year. The course would be offered during the second summer cycle beginning in July and run for approximately four weeks. The three-day a week schedule will be split between morning lectures and afternoon hands on laboratory activities. The lectures will cover topics ranging from the strength and behavior of materials, to robotics, and heat and mass transfer. Laboratory exercises will include the construction of a spaghetti bridge, the design of digital circuits, a light seeking robot, and many other activities. In combination, the students will learn the processes involved in team communications, project management, experimentation, and the utilization of tools (such as simulators).

Scholarship Application & Award Process
The program will include a student application and selection process that ensures student representation from the Baltimore Metropolitan region, including public, parochial and non-formal program students. The WSE and The Engineering Society of Baltimore, Education Committee and ESB Educational Foundation, and local public school representatives will work collaboratively to identify students for participation in the program. The WSE will use the established process to determine the level of need-based scholarship available to an applicant in lieu of tuition and fees.

Program Funding
The 2005 program was funded by solicitations from local engineering firms, societies and individuals with the assistance of the Engineering Society of Baltimore [ESB], Council of Engineering Companies, Maryland [ACECMD] and the Unions and Contractors Together Foundation [COUNT].
