The Foyer: Entrance Hall

Rising a full two stories to a rich wood paneled ceiling, this room is a showcase of Stanford White’s architecture. A balustrade gallery on the north, west and south is carried around the east wall as a decoration. The walls are Pacific Island wood paneling with delicate floral carving and fine detail. Look for oak leaf designs and a seashell pattern repeating through the carvings, a signature of White’s style. The fireplace has a liner of red marble, flanked by Acajan marble and speckled brick around the hearth. Note the fireside benches which date from 1892-1893. The stained-glass windows here are part of the largest standing example of Tiffany on the Eastern Seaboard.
